Giotto Beyond Borders

37 min
1 episode
In the early XIV century, Giotto paints the entire interior surface of the Scrovegni Chapel (Padua) with a unitary iconographic project of extraordinary modernity inspired by the Augustinian theologian Alberto da Padova. The narrative tone of the pictorial cycle reveals the truth in the eyes and feelings of its characters, who, touched by patterns of light, seem to come to life in the scene. Mystery and sacredness animate silent dialogues between painted characters in a comparison between reality and representation. As daylight fades, a surreal vision takes its place: the sacred dimension of the chapel becomes the setting for the contradictions of our time.
